UAE Announces $134 Million Plan To Build Simulated “Martian City”

28 September 2017
The Daily Mail reports that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced a $134 million plan to build a simulated “Mars Science City” as part of Dubai’s Mars 2117 Strategy to build the first settlement on Mars. The 1.9 million square-foot complex, if completed, will be “the largest space simulation city ever built.” Dubai plans for researchers to live inside the city for a year, “carrying out experiments to look at the food, water and energy needs to sustain life on Mars.” UAE Vice President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid said that his “aim is that the UAE will spearhead international efforts to make this dream a reality.” (Image: Artist's rendition of a Mars outpost.
